Suzi Whaples

The Mountain Woman, Suzi Whaples, known professionally as “mama”, is a national storyteller, humorist, and conference speaker. She has 30 years of experience in public speaking, teaching and entertainment. While working as a Youth Specialties Assistant at a local library she came up with the idea of sharing our Appalachian heritage with children through story. Thus began the Mountain Women.

In 1998, Mama & The Mountain Women, the troupe of Appalachian storytellers founded by Suzi, were chosen National Storytelling Champions. They, also, won the “Echoes Through the Coalfields” contest in 1999. Using costume, dialect, props, poetry, comedy and drama, Mama creates a unique experience in storytelling. She has appeared at hundreds of schools, libraries and churches in 19 states across America telling stories and teaching workshops. In 2007 Mama was honored with the “Bob McWhorter Award” for her outstanding work in storytelling. Mama weaves together a mixture of folklore, legend and family stories that will “tickle your funny bone” and “tug at your heart strings.”
